“Equinox” By Jonah Haber

Synopsis

“Equinox” is inspired by the concept of the two faces: the face you show the world and the face of who you truly are.

Directors statement

“The first face, you show the world. The second face, you show to your close friends and your family. The third face, you never show anyone. It is the truest reflection of who you are.” - Unknown

This is a quote that’s been circling online since the dawn of the internet. It’s origins are unknown, (many people call it a Japanese proverb but after doing my own research I haven’t found any evidence to support that), but its meaning is not.

I think the concept of putting up a personality to conform to the situation you are in is universal. We all put up an armour to protect ourselves from the world, changing the way we act and behave to fit in with those around us. However, when thinking about this quote some more, I find I personally connect more to the idea of two faces: the face you show the world and the face of who you truly are.

We constantly wear this first face as a mask to deceive the world so we can get places. We want to be likeable and approachable to climb social and professional ladders. We can’t be honest and truthful about the thoughts that go through our minds as there is a constant fear of judgement that haunts us. It is this duality of self that this film aims to capture through body movement and light. In Equinox, the contrast between the naturalism and simplicity of the day with the surrealism and intensity of the night is synonymous with these two faces.
