“It's Good to be Bad” by Anne Berry and Marlise Chu

Beyond the Short Official Premiere

The scene is set in a reimagined Hong Kong café, where tensions simmer between subculture factions. The twist? There's only one bowl of noodles remaining. What follows is an eruption of conflict where playful villainy and stylized confrontations allow the characters to have fun with a new found sense of empowerment.

FROM THE DIRECTORS

“Good to be Bad was intended from the start to be a "sandbox" film, inspired by an indie film ethos. No one involved in the project had gone to any sort of film school, and rarely had the chance to just play with cameras and techniques without any real "work" consequences.

We knew we wanted to explore a side of Hong Kong’s unique character, but also didn't want to anchor it too much in reality. Using a simple storyline we aimed to play with the idea of opening up both cast and crews alter-egos: having talent portray characters that allowed for bolder interpretation and expression, while on crew side, more unusually, we had two directors and three cinematographers collaborating on framing and blocking to explore how to combine different styles of thinking.

This short film is ultimately a self-made playground made by experimental filmmakers, and a nod to playfulness at its core.”
