“Transference” by Dylan Trupiano

Official Beyond the Short Online Premiere

In the Peruvian village of Palma Real, a member of the Ese’Eja nation shares the story of falling in love and running away with his wife. As he urges for their memory to live on, he slowly slips into a haunting reverie.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

"I made "Transference" in the Amazonian village of Palma Real as part of the Playlab Films' Creator's Lab, taught by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Throughout the two weeks I was there, Api encouraged me and other participants to make something deeply personal. I was still in the process of grieving the loss of my grandfather, who had recently died from COVID-19. While thinking of my grandmother, I worked with Arturo Chaeta Shanocua, a resident of Palma Real, to build the film around his memory of falling in love with his wife.

When a loved one passes, we naturally become carriers of their memory. As we age, we share these memories as though it is our duty, to ensure the dead are not forgotten. It was realizing this endless life existed through memory, and by extension cinema, that gave me peace in my grandfather’s passing and a profound catharsis in making this film."
