“Perfectly Flawed” By Jak O'Hare

Set under a bridge in the outskirts of Amsterdam after a hot summer. A real conversation blossoms between two complete strangers. This occasion formed an organic narration to the film. They talk life and lessons whilst we watch Yassine trying to find himself amongst all the stillness and frustration of the Pandemic.

HOU'LEY (ABSENT) Fond du Lac is a Dene First Nations community in northern Saskatchewan. The name quite literally translates to “Bottom of the Lake,” It has one of the highest suicide rates among youth in Canada. In this documentary short, one grieving mother tells the story of her fifteen year old son and his untimely and tragic death from suicide. With limited mental health support, it has been nearly three years since she has been able to speak openly about the trauma she and her family experienced following the loss of her son. ”I think we live in a world where we are constantly striving for some form of perfection. Especially in our online presence and particularly relevant to a generation who have grown up with social media platforms. For me the flaws are actually where a lot of the beauty lies.

‘Perfectly Flawed’ explores the duality of how we see the world and what we show and tell others. The information age has changed so much in terms of how we see our reflection on the world. The competition, the opportunities, the comparing all create such conflict and statements like ‘I know a lot of people, but I don’t know if their all my friends’.

The pandemic encouraged me to think - how would I have felt as a twenty something man starting out in the world. I think we are possibly leaving a massive gap between generations without much thought of its future consequences.

I spent a lot of time with Yassine & Mimi individually talking about life and their experiences. It was raw and refreshing. Its often easier to be more open with a stranger than someone you know. I put the two of them together for the first time and asked them to talk about life and love. This is what created the narrative to ‘Perfectly Flawed’. It was organic and at times uncertain but that’s life right?”
