“Hey Child” By Margo Price

"Hey Child” explores the perpetual cycle of addiction and depression, the scars you carry around with you from its relentless push and pull, and the daily struggle to regain control of what has left you powerless.

In 2012 Margo wrote "Hey Child" after the death of her baby, when a period of depression and substance abuse took a choking hold over her and her husband. It was important to Margo and me to stay true to the lyrics and to what was going on in her life when she wrote them. One of the biggest challenges with this was taking such a personal and vulnerable story and portraying it with the utmost delicacy and respect- to tell it truthfully, never sensationalized. From the onset, our number one goal was authenticity as well as to reach viewers who might be dealing with similar issues, who need to hear that they are not alone.

The visuals themselves show a gritty depiction of the perpetual cycle of addiction and depression, the scars you carry around with you from its relentless push and pull, and the daily struggle to regain control of what has left you powerless.

With a nod to Spike Lee, we take the viewer on a cyclical journey, starting off with Margo’s “thoughts” (the camera) being in full control as they push and pull her through the moments and memories that led her to this dark reality inside the motel room. From performing on stage to crashing a car and going to jail, it’s only when she decides to take back control and to face her demons head-on, is she able to run back through the memories of her past and out the motel door, finally breaking the cycle.
