“Hamdardi” by Ashley Tabatabai & Stefan Fairlamb
Set against the backdrop of the 2017 U.S. travel ban, Hamdardi explores the quiet devastation caused by faceless policies and the people caught within them. The story follows Ethan Reynolds, a weary TSA officer struggling with his own heartbreak after losing custody of his daughter. As he navigates the emotionally numbing world of immigration enforcement, he encounters Reza and Parvaneh, two Iranian siblings attempting to enter the country to see their ailing father. Caught between empathy and duty, Reynolds finds himself on the verge of becoming what he despises, another cog in a system built on fear and bureaucracy.
As pressure mounts from his superior, the hardened and racially prejudiced Hank Henson, Reynolds is forced to confront not only the dehumanizing nature of his job but the personal cost of remaining complicit. Hamdardi explores how compassion can survive in even the most oppressive environments and how easily it can be lost.
