“Making Beethoven Proud” by Brian Naughton

A high school music prodigy who loses his hearing after a violent assault by his classmates is forced to face the world without his most trusted sense.

Benji, a high school music prodigy, has one dream: to become a concert pianist. He is so focused on this dream that he struggles to make friends in school and is constantly harassed and bullied by his classmates. After his father left, his mother had to dedicate herself to her work in order to provide for Benji, and is rarely around. As a result, Benji lives a secluded life but he doesn’t care because he always has his music.

One day at school, after impressing his music teacher with an original piano piece, Benji is attacked by bullies who blow an airhorn in his ear, permanently damaging his hearing. He struggles to cope with his new life without his most trusted sense. He becomes more and more unraveled as he begins to hear less and less and he sees that he has been replaced at school as the prized music student. In a fit of rage, Benji starts smashing things around his house: A bowl of cereal, papers, his backpack, etc. His tantrum culminates when his eyes land on the piano. Benji rushes towards the piano and smashes the keys. He is jolted backwards when he realizes he can hear the notes. He cautiously approaches the piano and sits down.

He begins to play and, to his delight, he can hear the notes perfectly. We are then transformed with him into an alternate reality. Benji now sits on a stage behind a grand piano, wearing a tuxedo in front of a captivated audience. He finishes the piece and is met with raucous applause. We flash back to reality, back to his home. The auditorium and attentive onlookers are gone. A smile comes over Benji’s face as he realizes his dream is still alive.

The music never left him.
