“Mango” By Scott Lazer

Through the unfiltered perspective of her mobile phone, a young woman weighs what she wants with what is realistic.

The inspiration to make a film in this vertical format came from all the times I’ve unwittingly opened the camera function on my mobile phone and seen what my phone sees of me: a contorted, heavier, uglier version of myself. As unsightly as it is each time it happens, I cannot deny its truth, its rawness. Try as we may to perfectly curate our social media feeds, or write the best text message response, or angle our chin just so for a photo, that artifice is lost on our phones. They see it all - watching, recording, transmitting, and enabling all of our worst impulses - like an external id that lives outside our bodies that we carry with us all the time. This story, written by screenwriter Juli Blachowiak, zeroes in on how these devices can facilitate bad behavior, specifically in romantic relationships. If our phones could talk, what would they say about us?
