“Pasta & Test Score” by Stanley Xu

One day, Luigi receives full marks for his first school test. Excited, he decides to spend the night waiting for his mother’s return so he can share his results.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“This story was partly inspired by a childhood memory. I remembered being really excited when I scored 98/100 for my first test in school when I was 7 years old. I waited past midnight for my mother to return home, so that I could share with her my results. However, her reaction showed that she was uninterested and indifferent to say the least.

As both my parents and brother were often busy and out, I spent most of my childhood alone at home. With nobody around most of the time, TV was my main source of entertainment and companion, together with toys and other household items. It was only until late in my adolescence that I realised how much my childhood had shaped my relationship with my family, as well as the people around me, influencing my growth as a person in the later years of my adulthood.

Often times, it is those seemingly small events that happened in our childhood, which often became the pivotal experiences in changing our perspective and view towards life. The notions of childhood and memories are something that I’m deeply passionate about and are also the recurring themes that define most of my works.”
