“Any Asshole” by Jay Larson

Looking to become a commercial director, Jay Larson first seeks the advice of stand-up comic and writer Neal Brennan who gives him the confidence to go to a production company and pitch himself as a commercial director. Despite his mother's harsh criticism of this dream, Jay confronts Joel McHale about starring in his spec commercial. Joel resists the advance and so Jay moves on to ask Kumail Nanjiani and Blake Griffin about their potential involvement. They display the same hesitancy, leaving Jay to research production companies on his own. His ex-wife reminds him of an owner of a Production Company who adored one of his stand-up routines, leading him to discuss the prospect of pitching to Supply&Demand to Johnny Knoxville. Johnny directs Jay to a bar where he discovers an older version of himself. This older Jay reminds the younger version of what Neal Brennan told him -- "Any Asshole can direct a commercial." Jay leaves with the newfound confidence in himself to be a commercial director, leading to the unseen future journey that will take place.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“As a kid, commercials were a huge part of entertainment. “Time to Make the Doughnuts” and “Where’s the Beef” were tag lines that defined my childhood. SNL would always parody commercials and the Superbowl became The Superbowl for commercials. As a comedian and sketch comedy writer/director I always wanted to get into commercial directing, I just didn’t know how. I had written a bunch of spec spots and was hired a few times to write some copy. Finally one day I realized that I could take my experience in short films and sketch comedy as a tool to get me into the commercial directing world, and that’s what I did. Sometimes they don’t let you in the front door, or the side door, or the back door, so you need to climb the fire escape and get in through the roof.”
