“Are You Happy?” by Lunga "Steezus" Mthombeni

Beyond the Short Official Premiere

In discovery, two kids from the townships of Soweto, South Africa coincide on a quest to be  world wide Fashion Mogul's. This Documentary short takes us on a fascinating journey through the creative hub that has nurtured many of the talents now flourishing within the realm of Kulture. It shines a spotlight on a safe haven for creatives, a place where inspiration is born, and young minds come together in the name of artistic expression. This place is none other than Braam. Interestingly, it’s where Lebo and Fargo first crossed paths, fostering the exchange of ideas and the growth of their friendship, which ultimately evolved into a strong brotherhood and business.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“‘Are you Happy?’Is a short film that intricately weaves documentary elements with fashion and narrative storytelling, challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. I took upon many hats for this project such as script writer, DOP, Editor and Producer. Operating with a shoestring budget, I marshaled a team of enthusiastic young filmmakers, each bringing their unique vision and skills to the table. This experience was not only a testament to my directorial capabilities but also a reaffirmation of my commitment to nurturing a growing film community here at home in South Africa.

The conception of this piece was built in the objective to visually express bonds or relationships between people, specifically, a pair. I want to explore a relationship between two friends who share a lot of similarities in their lives. From the names of the hoods they grew up in, to their surnames. Ultimately, introducing the notion of partnerships. This experience was not just about directing a film; it was about fostering a community of like-minded individuals who dared to dream beyond their limitations. It was here that I discovered my true calling – not just as a director but as a mentor and a catalyst for creative collaboration.

Through Lebo and Fargo's story, we hope to inspire the next generation of creatives to seek out partnerships that not only share similar interests but a deep shared connection that emboldens self.”
