“Women of the World: Irene & Ana” by Alexandra Henry
Entrepreneurs Irene and Ana oversee every design and production detail that goes into their MADE IN SPAIN shoes. As they prepare to travel to the factories in Alicante, the duo becomes preoccupied about their next product shipment's arrival date. Meeting up with their shoe designer Eusebio, they tour each factory to check on the progress of their latest collection.
Back in Madrid, their day-to-day responsibilities include ensuring their customers have a unique experience in finding their next pair of favorite shoes in the heart of Madrid's trendiest neighborhood, Malasaña. In order to complete the shopping experience, they enlist top architect Oscar Barrios to design their new store. Celebrating 10 years of ‘slow fashion’ Irene and Ana continue to empower women through the intersection of design, creativity, and the human connection.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
“Last year, when I decided to make a series about entrepreneurial women, Irene and Ana immediately came to mind. I met them during a trip to Madrid in 2017 through mutual friends from New York City. They seemed like the coolest women in Madrid and their shoes, even cooler. But their down to earth personalities and passion for design, music, and culture allowed us to become quick friends, despite us being from worlds apart. Years later in 2024, after many reunions in Spain, I proposed making a short profile film about them and what they had created with Magro Cardona - a strong brand that resonated with independent women who appreciate design, craft, and comfort.
Immediately they were on board and pre-production began. I asked my dear friend Fernanda Steinmann to come on as a creative director, as she has years experience in fashion and beauty and I wanted her POV on how to make this film feel relatable but also stylish. My approach to documentary filmmaking is to use the smallest crew in order to become a fly on the wall and knew I needed a tight team in Spain. I reached out to some commercial production colleagues in Madrid who connected me with the production company, Foguete Films, that was able to come on board with a local producer, director of photography and sound mixer. It was a very run and gun style of production (we literally had to run down the platform to catch our train in Alicante back to Madrid on our first shoot day) but having two personable characters like Irene and Ana made the 4 shoot days extremely fun and at times hilarious. With this film, I not only want more people to discover their Made in Spain shoes, but also to get to know the incredible forces behind Magro Cardona.”
