“Empty Nesters” by Devon Solwold

It’s autumn 2020, and Leah is “about to pop.”

Twenty-five and married, eight months pregnant, following a promising (yet culturally prescribed) path to domestic life in the midwest, Leah battles with visceral symptoms of doubt. As she and her husband, Aja (a devotee to midwestern sensibilities), endure a romantic getaway, Leah’s past miscarriage gnaws at her, along with a daunting question: have I already outgrown my marriage?

In an effort to rekindle the young love that began at the family lake cabin, Leah fears that they are strangers to each other, which ultimately spirals into a final reckoning of hard truths, unleashed. Also... Spaghetti-Os and a dead bird.
