High school principal "Prince" is paid a visit by a close friend and local Police constable who tells him of a strange threat, an escaped convict, making his way down the New Zealand countryside toward their town. The constable claims this man can do unimaginable things – somehow able to break into his victim's homes without making a sound.

It's only when the convict arrives and preys on their community, killing a student who gets in the way of his mysterious hunt, that these two authority figures and their relationship are put to the test. As Prince tries to protect a student, one that he is perhaps inappropriately close to, an 18-year-old girl who fits the description of the convict's typical victim, assumptions between friends and colleagues turn deadly as The Mute comes to collect.
