“Victory To The Mimers” by James Nicholas Green

A satirical comedy drama inspired by the infamous UK Miner’s strikes of the 1980s; however this time, the fight isn’t in the pits, but on the stage.

In this surreal, alternate vision of Britain, struggling actors and artists wage war against government cuts and cultural indifference, exposing the deep-rooted classism and underfunding plaguing the industry.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“It was a huge effort, entirely self-funded after other avenues fell through. With David Arnold (James Bond, Hot Fuzz) as Executive Producer, and support from producer Kabir Malik, we split the budget three ways and greenlit it ourselves.

I’ve always aimed to create work with something to say; stories with substance, not just style. Satire and tongue-in-cheek humour are my way into social issues, even if that means being a little on-the-nose to make the point land.

This film nods to classics like Brassed Off and Billy Elliot; political yet warm. I wanted to show working-class life without cliché or pity. The stylised visuals, using symmetry, planimetric angles and static frames, helped create a world that feels offbeat but sincere. Performances were played straight. The premise is absurd, but it’s funnier when characters treat it with total seriousness. The comedy lands best when no one in the film is in on the joke.”
